This painting of a simple chair set on a bare floor of terracotta tiles is one of Van Gogh’s most iconic images. Straight-backed and with no armrests, the chair is made of plain unpolished wood painted yellow and has a rush seat. Entirely functional, its construction could not be more basic. Although it appears sturdy, it is also crudely made – the legs, for example, are not quite properly aligned. Van Gogh has placed his pipe and tobacco pouch on the seat. Behind the chair, to the left, is a low box signed ‘Vincent’; it contains some sprouting bulbs, possibly onions. To the right, part of a blue door is visible, its large hinge echoing the line of the chair’s legs. The painting was a pair to another picture, 'Gauguin’s Chair' in @vangoghmuseum. Writing to his brother Theo in December 1888, Vincent described the paintings: ‘the last two studies are odd enough. Size 30 canvases, a wooden rush-bottomed chair all yellow on red tiles against a wall [daytime]. Then Gauguin’s armchair, red and green night effect, walls and floors red and green again, on the seat two novels and a candle, on thin canvas with thick impasto.’ As the letter reveals, the two paintings were pendants intended to be hung together, with one chair turned to the right, the other to the left. We are temporarily closed as a precautionary measure to help contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Visit our website for the most up to date information. Today is #InternationalMuseumDay, and this year, perhaps more than any other year, it is more important than ever that we celebrate museums as valuable spaces for cultural exchange. – With the theme of "Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion," this year's edition aims to celebrate the manifold perspectives that make up museums, their communities and people. Pictured here are installation views from #FredWilson's 2018 exhibition at #PaceGallery, "Afro Kismet." Originally slated to open this past Friday, May 15, at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, the exhibition has now been pushed to 2021. Click the link in our bio to read a statement from the museum highlighting what you can expect from the forthcoming presentation, and the diverse, intersecting stories it seeks to tell. – Image: Installation View, "Fred Wilson: Afro Kismet," July 10–August 17, 2018, Pace Gallery, New York ©️ Fred Wilson @thegibbesmuseum

We are celebrating Richard Avedon on what would have been his 97th birthday, with ‘Marilyn Monroe, actress, New York City, May 6, 1957’ as today's #PictureForTheWeekend. Click the link in bio to explore the work further. Considered "the most honest photograph ever taken of Marilyn Monroe", Avedon's portrait of the beautiful, tragic Monroe shot in his studio on Madison Avenue is today among the most famous portraits ever made. "For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that's – she did Marilyn Monroe", Avedon recalled of the portrait session. "And then there was the inevitable drop. And when the night was over and the white wine was over and the dancing was over, she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn't photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no." At that moment, Avedon captured one of the most photographed stars of the time without her public facade, producing an image that gives a rare glimpse of her private self. The second photograph visible here is an outtake from earlier in the session. Throughout his portraiture, Avedon strived to uncover the true personality of everyone he photographed, whether that be a celebrity or worker in the American West. Often photographs of public figures enhance their personas, but Avedon's talent lay within his ability to break through appearances. “There was no such person as Marilyn Monroe…(She was) invented, like an author creates a character." – Richard Avedon Image: ‘Marilyn Monroe, actress, New York City, May 6, 1957’ Copyright © The Richard Avedon Foundation

Michelangelo Merisi detto #Caravaggio (1571-1610), Bacco (dett.), 1598c. G. P. Bellori, Le Vite de’ pittori scultori e architetti moderni, 1672 E N G 🌍 #InDetail “And so under constraint of necessity, Michele went to work for Cavaliere Giuseppe d'Arpino, who set him to painting flowers and fruits, which he imitated so well that through him they attained the superior beauty that affords such delight nowadays. He painted a vase of flowers with the transparencies of the water and the glass, and with the reflections of the window of a room, and the flowers sprinkled with the freshest dewdrops; he also executed other pictures superbly with like imitation.” G.
